Club Newlands “Sports Themed ” Kids Meet and Greet
14 March 2007
On Wednesday evening Club Newlands hosted a “Sports themed” Kids Meet and Greet on the pitch at Newlands.
The kids got to test their skills against our Vodacom Cup players and spent some time getting to know the stars of the future.
The Junior Members went from one activity to the next, displaying some super skills dribbling soccer balls, putting on the greens, side-stepping Attie Winter before driving for the try-line – fun was had by all.
The youngsters, all keen to show off their talent and try-scoring abilities, were breaking through the “player's defence...” flying through the air to score, then making a soft landing on the bed of contact shields. It was hard to tell who was more competitive – the players or the kids!. Morgan Newman got his team motivated to score “interesting” tries, resulting in youngsters bursting through contact shields and Sarel Potgieter doing a roll dive a-la Philip Burger!
Thanks to Willards and Wilde Juice for the refreshments, Vodacom Golf Village for setting up the Putting Course and Driving Range also to adidas for supplying the soccer balls.
Vodacom WP will be playing at Florida Park in Ravensmead 17:00 on Saturday. Go down and show your support, they might not have been as skilled as the youngsters on the Putting Green, but with a rugby ball in hand, they’re awesome!

Kick-off party 2007
The Vodacom Stormers, together with their supporters club, Club Newlands, welcomed
supporters to Newlands on 24 January 2007, to celebrate and launch the 2007 Vodacom
Stormers campaign.
The evenings show started with a tribute to the past 9 years of Stormers rugby,
showing visuals of some of the most awesome tries and icons that has contributed to the
success of the Stormers campaign, as it enters its 10th year. The evening was not
only about honouring the past, but also celebrating the future. Vodacom Stormers captain
Luke Watson addressed the 700 strong crowd with emotive words, displaying the kind of
passion and charisma the Newlands faithful have become accustom to over the past season.
The on stage presentation culminated in the introduction of the 2007 Vodacom Stormers
squad, as well as an interactive SMS competition, which got the crowd going on their
cellphones, all hoping to be selected to be the winner of the first signed blue Vodacom
Stormers jersey. Also on show where the Vodababes, the sexy Vodacom dancers who will be
performing at Newlands during the course of the season. Once the formalities drew to a
close, the players made their way into the crowd, signing autographs and posing for photos
with devoted followers.
Despite the sweltering heat, the atmosphere was electric, with the lively band adding
to the celebrations as supporters officially kicked off the 2007 season.
The event was presented by Klipdrift, powered by Nashua Mobile and supported by
Vodacom, Peninsula Beverages and Good Hope FM.

Sleepover 2007
Club Newlands (official supporters club to the Vodacom Stormers and WP) played host to
their first event of the year, an annual Sleepover, presented by Oxbow Xerox, at Newlands
Rugby Stadium on Friday 12 January. This exclusive opportunity to camp out at the hallowed
ground has fast become a highlight on the Club Newlands events calendar. Tents in all
shapes, sizes and colours, get placed on the special turf by parents and their kids, who
are all so excited to be at this popular event.
The Vodacom Stormers team, joined the 180 youngsters for a coaching clinic on the field
early Friday evening, as the sun set behind the Grand Stand.
Following 45 minutes of rugby fun, Vodacom Stormers captain Luke Watson introduced the
2007 squad to the loyal supporters. Vodacoms Mo the Meerkat made a guest appearance,
performing a special routine. The players handed out rugby balls courtesy of Vodacom and
also picked their mascot for the first match against the Western Force from the
enthusiastic bunch of youngsters.
Once the team had wrapped up the formalities, the youngsters queued up for their
Nandos meal. The dads completed the rugby experience by getting the braais
going for the grownups, meat courtesy of Shoprite Checkers and a salad pack supplied by
Dew Crisp .
Movies on the big screen, a mini driving range set up by the Vodacom Golf Village, as
well as the Die Burger kicking competition - a regular feature at Newlands based home
games - ensured both adults and kids enjoyed fun in the shadows of the towering stands
late into the night.

the following partners for their unwavering support in making the 2007 Oxbow Xerox
Sleepover a roaring success: Oxbow Xerox, Nashua Mobile, Vodacom, Penbev (Powerade) and

The Potjiekos Competition
Club
Newlands hosted it's first ever Potjiekos Competition at Newlands Rugby Stadium on
Saturday 30 September.
TOP, XKREEWP, The WPJagters, Who's your Daddy, and the Ama Luke Luke Champs didn't
waist time in getting their potjies hot. With each team area having "a Touch of
Province", and aromas to make your mouth water, the Vodacom WP players, Gio Aplon,
Peter Grant and Robbie Diack were not looking forward to the tough decision ahead!
Their taste buds tingled and their stomachs were full, and when it came to casting the
final vote, it couldn't have been a tougher decision. XKREEWP walked away with a fantastic
hamper supplied by Klipdrift, for their inspiring presentation and WP team spirit.
The main winners of the 2006 Club Newlands Potjiekos competition, with the best potjie
this side of the mountain, were "Who's your Daddy"! Well done Fiona, Tyrone,
Craig C, Lauron, Julian, Merlin, Craig A and Mandy!
Mini Golf with Junior Supporters
Junior Club
Newlands members challenged some Vodacom WP players to a round of mini golf on Tuesday 26
September at the Vodacom Golf Village in Tygervalley. The evening was a great success! On
arrival the kids were thrilled with their Vodacom T-shirts and Vodacom drawstring
backpacks, and with sponsored holes around the course, there was plenty more in store! The
youngsters filled their Vodacom drawstring bag with products courtesy of the following
Club Newlands sponsors - Willards, Bokomo, Coca Cola, CTRU, Vodacom, Nivea, The Chris
Burger Fund and NG Kids.
While the kids and players were working their magic on the course, the adults relaxed
with a beer and a boerewors roll in the lapa.
The water hazards were in abundance and with the Vodacom WP players swapping the oval
ball for a putter and a little white golf ball, cheerful banter was quick to follow! One
of the 8 year olds soon chirped Vodacom WP u21 Captain, Morgan Newman You
should stick to Rugby
with a massive smile on his face.
Vodacom WP captain Luke Watson concluded the evening with some lucky draws - a
fantastic set of Fearless Kids Golf clubs, donated by the Golfers Club, was won by Jean De
Goede. 2 Golf lessons, sponsored by Vodacom Golf Village, were won by Liam Saffier and
Roan Badenhorst. And lastly, a signed Vodacom WP jersey went to Peter Cameron. Congrats
boys!
Thank you Allan and his team from the Vodacom Golf Village for their hospitality
we hope to be visiting you again soon!
2006 Club Newlands Touch Rugby Tournament
Klipdrift and Coca-Cola presented the 2006 Club Newlands "1 touch" Touch
Rugby Tournament at Villager Football Club, held between our local Cape Town Restaurants
and Venues, held on the 9th July.
The competition between the various teams was feisty, making the wind not the only fast
moving element on the day, never before had we seen such fast moving waitrons! Many of the
players pushed themselves to their physical limits and beyond to ensure the success of
their team.
The Wild Fig Restaurant, Players Cafe & Bar @ The River Club, Panarottis Somerset
Mall represented by Barloworld Toyota Warriors and Nino's Somerset Mall represented by
Oxbow Xerox, were the 4 teams who played at the finale at Newlands Rugby Stadium on the
15th July.
This exciting end to the tournament was held as a curtain raiser to the ABSA Currie Cup
Home game against the Vodacom Cheetahs. Players and sponsors alike were so excited about
being on the hallowed turf at Newlands, thus making it a fitting end to this Inaugural
Club Newlands Touch Rugby Tournament.
A big thanks goes out to all those responsible for making our day special - Klipdrift,
Coca- Cola, Vodacom, Nashua Mobile, Heart 104.9fm, Dolphin Beach Hotel (Singer Group),
Nando's, Willards (Kettle Chips), PowerAde caravan, Nestle (smarties, bar-one), Chris
Burger/Petro Jackson Players Fund material, CN Flyers and oranges! Plus the "In 2
Touch" team who kept score, thanks!
Photographers from Pro Alliance and Die Burger were on hand to document the 2 days,

The Club Newlands Golf Day held on the 20th March 2006
Atlantic
Beach Golf Club is probably one of the most spectacular courses in the country with
wonderful views and great wildlife, but when the wind blows, this pretty woman can turn
into an ugly harridan if you dont know what youre doing.
Thirty two 4 balls took up the challenge at 11am, bringing together Vodacom Stormers
players, WP Rugby management and business men and supporters, all eager to play a round of
golf together and test their mettle on the course.
This day certainly had wind and after the rounds there were some shell shocked players
who gathered around to enjoy a drink and a meal, whilst being entertained by two Top Cape
Town Comedians. Fortunately it was all in the name of fun and a great time was had by all.
The sponsors - Nashua Mobile, Klipdrift and Auric Auto - made the day possible as well
as all those who donated prizes as well as product for the Goodie Bags, unbelievable
stuff!
Special mention must be made of those people who braved the elements at the branded tee
boxes and greens, encouraging participants as they headed off into the wind - they were
great and they enhanced the players experience.
Wind or no wind, it was a great day and we look forward to next year.
Meet & Greet, 3 May 2006
Club Newlands
provides plenty of opportunities for supporters to meet their heroes in a relaxed and
comfortable environment. On the 3rd of May a Meet and Greet was held in the Letterstedt
Pub at SAB.
The Vodacom Stormers recently returned from a successful month tour of Australasia and
their fans welcomed them home with open arms.
With the SAB beers, fruit coolers and soft drinks on the house, courtesy of SA
Breweries, players shared stories from the tour and the tough lessons they had learnt this
season. Weve got two games left this season (Sharks away and Bulls at home),
both will be big games and for us both are really important. It can make a massive
difference in where we end up on the log and itll be important for us as a team to
show that we learnt from our lessons this season, said Vodacom Stormers No.8 Joe van
Niekerk when chatting to the supporters. Joe went on to thank the supporters for riding
the wave with the team, through the tough times this season. For us as a team
its so important to know that you are there for us no matter what. Were a
young side now, but we are going places! Joe also introduced his team mates (Gerrie
Britz, Adri Badenhorst, Naas Olivier, Rayno Benjamin, Chumani Booi, Jongi Nokwe, Neil
Fullard, JD Moller and Joe Pietersen) who joined him at the event.
Gauteng Meet & Greet
The team and
management are always impressed with the level of support they receive in Gauteng and
wanted to meet their up country fans. At stages during the game it felt as if you were at
Newlands the shouting for the Vodacom Stormers was so loud and the number of flags being
waved around the stadium was a wonderful sight. All this support really helps the guys
when they play away from home.
After the win on Saturday the entire squad and management met with supporters in the
Touchdown Restaurant at Ellis Park. Fans were delighted to finally meet their heroes in
the flesh.
Club Newlands would like to thank Milica, Seka and Louis from Touchdown for their
hospitality and for sponsoring platters of delicious rolls and urge all our members that
are in Gauteng or travel up for a match to take advantage of their match day hospitality.

Meet & Greet - 21 Feb
Eskom nearly put
a bolt in the works for our Meet & Greet on Tuesday. The power cut that lasted for
most of the day had us a bit worried, candles were ready, matches in the pocket, glow in
the dark stripes were being stuck on the players and then at 5pm the lights came back on!!
Unfortunately the traffic stopped a lot of people from joining us and the ones that
battled through to Newlands were in their cars for up to 2 hours (thanks for the effort).
Luckily Nando's was on hand to revive them...
Those that did make it were treated to a very candid talk by Gary Gold. Gary introduced
6 of the new Vodacom Stormers players Attie Winter, Henk Eksteen, Jongi Noki, Rayno
Benjamin, Naas Olivier & Justin Melck and explained why they were chosen to join the
team.
Rob Linde also joined us. Rob under went major neck surgery at the beginning of the
year but has been using his recovery time to help coach the Vodacom WP team at lineout
practise.
Junior Members go Treasure Hunting
Who would
of thought there was so much hidden treasure to be found around the Newlands Stadium!
Club Newlands Junior members, together with Vodacom Stormers players, followed clues
that took them to the four corners of the stadium. Each clue had either a task or a search
connected to it with a goodie as a reward. Luckily most of the treasure was hidden
outside, as inside was pitch black due to the power cuts.
Vodacom Stormers Kick Off Party Presented by Captain Morgan

|
The players in any team in top level competition know that the support that they
receive from the people of the area and region is always extremely important as this helps
them both on and off the field, and if the atmosphere at the Vodacom Stormers Kickoff
Party presented by Captain Morgan on Thursday 2nd February was anything to go by, then the
new Vodacom Stormers team are already ahead of the game for the 2006 season. This event
that is staged by Club Newlands is always a highlight if the year and the most recent
edition did not disappoint. The high energy function took place at Grand West Casino
and Entertainment World with approximately 800 fans that saw the new range of Vodacom
Stormers playing and casual kit as well as other new gear unveiled in the Adidas dance and
fashion show, before the players themselves took to the stage to show how they would look
for the season ahead. Jean de Villiers and Eddie Andrews entertained the crowd and kept
things moving along very nicely acting as MCs for the evening, and both of them
reveled in the role a sign of things to come when their playing careers draw to a
close perhaps??
Kobus van der Merwe and De Wet Barry gave their thoughts as to how the upcoming season
would unfold. Both coach and captain exuded an air of quite confidence and one senses that
this is the underlying feeling within the camp that there is a lot of hard work to
be done after the past two disappointing seasons, but that this is the group of players to
do it. The players were then individually introduced to the expectant crowd and they each
received their seasons jersey from one of the supporters with their best wishes.
After the formalities were over, it was time for players and fans alike to mix and to
enjoy the evening something that they all took full advantage of. The support
sponsors in the form of Nashua Mobile, Powerade and Vodacom as well as the primary
sponsor, Captain Morgan, were well represented on the night, and they too showed their
support for the team as well as the large Vodacom Stormers supporter base by being
involved in such a function. It is not often that fans get to rub shoulders with their
heroes, and this they certainly did on Thursday evening the same players
shoulders upon which much expectation for the year ahead rests |
The Oxbow/Xerox Club Newlands Sleepover
|
The Oxbow/Xerox Club Newlands Sleepover is a unique annual event hosted by Club
Newlands (the official supporters club of the Vodacom Stormers and WP) for its members. On
Friday 13 January, 280 "father and son" (and some moms!) teams pitched their
tents on the hallowed pitch of Newlands Rugby Stadium, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Adding
to this unique experience, the children had the chance to take part in a coaching clinic
with the Vodacom Stormers players, and both adults and the children got to mingle with
their heroes after the clinic. Each child received a rugby ball courtesy of Vodacom, and
these were quickly filled with autographs as the children posed with their heroes for
treasured photographs.
Nandos was on hand to supply the kids with delicious burger meals, whilst the dads each
received a championship boerewors and steak pack to braai courtesy of Shoprite/Checkers.
The braais were soon lit, and the delicious smell of boerewors filled the stadium. Whilst
parents relaxed and enjoyed their unusual camping surroundings, the children were kept
entertained by videos and games.
Die Burger sponsored a kicking competition for the dads, with the prize being R500
cash. Five contestants, selected from a lucky draw, took part with Mark Lansdell coming
out the ultimate winner.
Saturday morning everyone was up bright and early for breakfast, after which tents were
stowed away and it was time to go home laden with goodie bags filled with gifts and a
personalised photo of the sleepover, printed by Oxbow/Xerox.
A very big thank you to the following people, without whose support this event would
not have been possible. |

Junior Meet & Greet
Wednesday night was yet again a great opportunity for our junior members to spend some
quality time with the players, although the parents werent too far behind! More than
100 juniors joined the players on the pitch at Newlands for some fun.
They took the kids through some Province drills and spent about an half hour
jolling with them on the pitch. Coca Cola supplied the refreshments and a
lucky draw prize for every child. Thanks again to Mike from Pro Alliance for taking all
the pictures. To view and purchase go to www.alliancephoto.com
It is always a pleasure for the Vodacom WP team members to meet their supporters
what better way to do so than over lunch! With school holidays in full swing, kids and
parents alike filled the three selected Nandos stores in Kenilworth, Milnerton and
Long Street on Wednesday to catch sight of their favourite stars. A little shy at first
approach, it wasnt long before the youngsters made new friends.
Schalk, Luke, Tonderai, De Wet, Zhahier and Shimmie spent their time signing autographs
and smiling for the camera, with Zhahier even finding time to take on a supporter in a
quick game of cards! Thank you to all the Club Newlands members for their support of
Vodacom WP and Nandos official partner to Club Newlands.
Welcome Boks back
21 September - Club Newlands members turned out in force to see our Vodacom WP
Springboks Jean, Joe, Schalk, De Wet, Marius, Tonderai, Eddie and Shimmie.
The players were delighted with the support and encouragement they received from
everyone present. The boys signed hundreds of autographs and posed for numerous
photographs.
The highlight of the evening was a Q&A session, led by MC Eddie
Andrews, who kept everyone entertained! A thank you goes to Castle, Nandos and Amarula for
sponsoring the evening.
Party bus

On 27 August Limos@leisure lent their party bus to Club Newlands to take members to the
Bulls game. The bus picked up supporters at two destinations - Tygervalley and Tableview.
The crowd were festive, with the majority suitably attired in blue and white, the music
was fun and the SAB beer was cold. Members were dropped off at the Club Newlands lounge
for some pre-match drinks.
After the game the lounge was packed with merry revelers looking forward to the return
trip. The bus trip home was even more festive than the early journey, with dancing taking
place on both levels of the bus! The unanimous feeling was to have the bus for every home
game! We'll see what we can do...

If you wish to hire the Party Bus or a limousine for a private function call Loren on
021 426 4476. Limos@leisure also operates in Johannesburg
SAB trip
Our last Meet & Greet on 24 August was held in the Letterstead Bar at
the SA Breweries in Boundary Road. Members were introduced to Vodacom WPs new Team
Manager Chippie Solomon and players Corné Uys, Pieter Louw, Federico Mendez, Earl Rose,
Gerrie Britz and Neil Fullard. Even Vodacom WP coaches Kobus van der Merwe and Gary Gold
sneaked in unannounced for a drink after a cold and wet training session at Newlands.
But the treat of the evening came courtesy of SA Breweries, when the bar was opened and
all SAB products were on the house!
Fun with Colour
It was the juniors turn on 10 August to have the players all to
themselves. We decided to do something different, the Juniors and the players were
divided up into groups and were given posters to colour in. I am not sure who had
more fun the children or the players! Keep an eye out for the masterpieces around the
Stadium. Thanks to Waltons for sponsoring the crayons, Oxbow/Xerox for printing the
posters and Nandos for supplying the food.
HMAS Anzac
The Australian Navy visited our shores for the first time in 30
years on 23 July, their first stop in Cape Town was to the Club Newlands Lounge to watch

WP team, including the new coaching staff. In return the players were introduced to their
youngest fan Anka Grous.

joined us for the day.

|
Presidents Suite The Presidents Suite
is not open to the general public, but as a special experience for our members, we were
allowed to hold one of our club houses in this beautiful room overlooking the Newlands
Stadium. It was a real treat for all who attended as they got the inside track
from Gert Smal in terms of the Stormers season ahead and were the first to hear the
new Stormers theme song. |
|
|
Stormers Party At the kick off to the season, Club
Newlands held a party sponsored by Nashua Mobile to thank corporate suite holders for
their support. At the first of its kind ceremony for the Stormers squad, the players
were handed their Stormers jerseys individually by Club Newlands members whose names were
chosen out of a lucky draw quite a unique experience!! |

nights are a real treat for members. Members get to meet the players and coaching staff in
a relaxed, comfortable environment in different rooms at Newlands. The numbers are
kept reasonably small to give everyone a chance to chat to the players. Wonderful
snacks have been supplied by Butlers Pizza, Pick n Pay, Nandos and Golden Spur. |

|
Pre Match Braais beat the stadium rush! Club
Newlands holds pre match braais and they are always a treat. Members arrive before the
crowds and enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the Gazebo next to the stadium. Injured players
on the team come down and join us for a bite to eat and happily chat about the upcoming
game. |
|
|
Breakfast Its always nice to get together and
watch the away matches. That is what we did one morning at the Holiday Inns,
Newlands to watch the Blues game. We had the most delicious breakfast and watched
the guys absolutely demolish the Blues what a performance !!. Joe van Niekerk &
Jean De Villiers entertained us with their comments on the match in a Q & A session
and advised our members how their recovery from injuries were going. |
|
|
Primi Piatti Ever thought you recognised your
waiter from somewhere? That is just what happened when the team tried their hand at
being waiters in Primi Piatti outlets around Cape Town . The players looked after
there diners with surprising flair, mixed cocktails with panache and made a mean pizza.
They also had some great prizes from Club Newlands to give out. |
